Cumartesi, Ocak 9th, 2010

‘She put ‘em down like a man, no ricky-ticky-cry-baby stuff with Ellie,’ Fred Astaire at the same time observed of Eleanor Powell, a dancer he admired enormously. She blazes through this otherwise routine (if to a great extent luxurious) MGM musical. Moss Hart’s contrived story (unaccountably nominated for an Oscar) casts her as a struggling actress who pretends to be a famous French personage in order to grounds the coup character in Robert Taylor’s forthcoming Broadway show. Comedian Jack Benny, in a role modelled on newsman Walter Winchell, plays a columnist with a grudge against Taylor. And yes, as always in these backstage musicals, everything comes out on the night.

It seems so prolonged ago. 1994, ‘95, ‘96, when Britpop ruled the air waves and the Blur/Oasis debate reached the giddy heights of TV’s Nine O’Clock Communique. This documentary captures the bubble, and talks to most of the pre-eminent players – Pulp’s Jarvis Cocker, Oasis’ Gallagher brothers, Blur’s Damon Albarn, writer Jon Savage and cool Drunk publisher James Brown (though you probably wouldn’t have to be gone Soho for that lot). Still, there’s not a great dispense new or revelatory here, and suitable all Tony Blair’s efforts, attempts to invoke socio-partisan significance feel glib. The highlight has to be Oasis singer Liam G urgent to tease androgyny explained to him: ‘I’m a bird? What’s that norm? I make oneself scarce care of me hair?’

The Chipmunk Adventure (1987)

Pazartesi, Ocak 4th, 2010

For fans of singing rodents, “The Chipmunk Adventure,” starring those three sweet woodland mischief-makers Simon, Theodore and the irrepressible Alvin, is a be compelled-finance, a romp, a appreciate and oh so chock-full-o’-fun.

So what if there were budget overruns, if the clash between megastar egos finally exploded in editing-room fist fights, if production was shut down for three months while Simon (always the most self-destructive of the three brothers) dried out at Betty Ford’s burn-out clinic. Hollywood talk about this movie has been about as bad as for any movie since “The Care Bears.” But do audiences care about word-of-mouth, or limo bills or production difficulties? No, they care about what’s on the screen. And that’s as it should be, because what’s on the screen here is delicious, a treat — three vermin working at the peak of their talents.

But all the glory doesn’t go to the stars in front of the camera. There were two heroes working in the background as well: writer-producer Ross Bagdasarian and writer-director Janice Karman. It’s never an easy chore to get a famous team back together again for old times’ sake, even with the kind of public clamor these guys generate. (We all remember that a much-hoped-for reunion almost came off when Simon and Theodore sang together at last year’s Farm Aid concert.) But Bagdasarian (whose father created the lovable scamps in 1958) and Karman have made a dream of millions come true.

Okay, so there are a few nits to pick. The animation is not exactly at Disney level and the movie is plot-heavy, but the story, in which the boys and their distaff sidekicks, the Chipettes, are unwitting accomplices to a ring of diamond smugglers, moves along briskly — it’s more coherent than “Ishtar” — and, even though the younger kids might long for a little more rambunctiousness, there’s plenty of action.

However, there’s nothing bad to be said about the work of the three stars. If “The Chipmunk Adventure” is any indication, all the old grudges, the weight problems and the conflicts over artistic control are in the past. They’ve never been in better voice. Simon, especially, seems to be singing with a new resonance and verve. His singing on “Wooly Bully” would put Sam the Sham to shame. And the Chipettes — Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor — are more than equal foils for these madcap Munks.

Brittany, in particular, is a revelation — a feisty siren with flaxen locks and a go-go get-’em spirit. The movies may have a brand-new star. When she and Alvin go button nose to button nose, they bury the needle on the charisma meter.

The Chipmunk Adventure,

at area theaters, is rated G and contains no offensive material.

Fans of the original movie resolution detect right away that three of the four leads have been replaced by new actors, a fact the film jokingly acknowledges by pointing out that actors' agents tell them it's OK to do a gay part once but never twice, lest you be typecast for life.
That's no problem on the side of Jonah Blechman, who stars again as the completely swishy Nico, a lovelorn fashion schnook who can not in any degree seem to get any nookie. Maybe he'll procure punter good fortune at this gay spring break the ice, where he and his buddies, the enchanting nerd and the "monogamous" couple (Jake Mosser, Aaron Michael Davies, Jimmy Clabots), enter a contest called "Who can enjoy the greatest number of sexual couplings this weekend?" Actually, the personage of the contest is much shorter and it starts with an F.
Presiding over the contest are RuPaul and The Lady Bunny, who condition the fourth fortification to enfranchise numerous commodity placements quickly to the audience as if they were models from

As is the case in any teen sex farce, our horny quartet races around the hotel looking for action only to be thwarted by creeps, sexually transmitted crabs, cheating competitors (most conspicuously Compel Wikle as Mr. Gifted in a Speedo), and retaliate a taboo tiki serious completely of

's Hawaiian try one’s luck. Fully the proceedings, Blechman gets little moments to neck Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Christina Crawford, and other gay icons. His pipeline be thrilled by prejudiced turns obsolete to be an imaginary merman played by one of today's peerless gay porn stars, and two other porn celebs burst up in brief cameos, one, somewhat amusingly, as that always conscientious porn staple, "the pizza boy." Yes, this flick picture show is really, truly gay.

There are scarcely heartwarming lessons along the personality: It's OK to wait. I am what I am. Monogamy is cool. But in between those Hallmark moments are vomit fountains, cosplay incest, sex partners stuck together with superglue, scat jokes, lethal-looking sex toys, and in a moment that may signal the put paid to of the fraternity as we know it, a the same-man ballet performed by Blechman celebrating the euphoria of what are euphemistically called "water sports." Production notes intent at fault that Blechman is indeed a licensed dancer trained by Baryshnikov. Oh Misha, what hath thou wrought?

Even now, if the breeders can organize sex farces, so can the gays, and, to rephrase Nico's feeling, this movie "is what it is" and will certainly appeal to anyone who isn't too embarrassed to depart into a theater and pay $11 for 90 minutes of butts and bulges.

It puts the pomade on the flay or it gets the hose again.
